The Core Difference: Nickel Content

The difference comes down to nickel. Grade 304 contains roughly 8 percent nickel, giving it strong resistance to rust and corrosion. Grade 201 contains only about 1 percent nickel, with manganese added as a cheaper substitute. In a dry environment, you might not notice the difference for years. In a bathroom, where hardware faces constant water, steam, and cleaning chemicals, 201 will show rust spots within months.

Reliable Testing Methods

The most practical way to test is with a stainless steel identification solution. Apply one drop to a clean surface, wait three to five minutes, and observe the color change. The solution reacts with manganese: a dark red or purple stain indicates high manganese content, meaning the steel is likely 201. No reaction means the nickel content is high enough to be 304.
