A floor drain can look solid, resist corrosion and carry a beautiful finish, and still fail at its one job: letting water disappear fast enough. Flow rate is the number behind that job, yet it is the least compared figure in most buying decisions. Here is what it means and how much a project needs.

Start with what goes in, not what the catalogue says. A standard showerhead delivers roughly 8 to 12 liters per minute in most Western bathrooms, while large rain or power heads can reach 15 to 20. A single-shower wet area therefore needs a drain rated comfortably above 12 L/min under real working conditions. If one drain serves several sources, such as a shower plus a washing machine, the inflows add up.

Three factors decide what a drain can actually pass. The first is outlet diameter, because a 40 mm outlet will never match a 75 mm one no matter how wide the grate is. The second is the open area of the grate, since decorative covers often restrict flow more than the body underneath. The third is the water head used in testing: a drain rated 36 L/min under a 20 mm head will pass far less with the thin 3 to 5 mm water film a sloped bathroom floor produces. Rules of thumb help turn this into a spec. A single shower works well with a drain rated around 25 to 30 L/min. Double showers and full wet rooms should look at 50 L/min or more. Utility rooms with washing machine pulses need headroom for short bursts above the steady rate. Balconies mainly deal with rain, where local rainfall intensity sets the target. Local codes always override these guides.

For distributors, the practical step is comparing drains under the same test head and checking that the outlet size matches the waste pipe on site, since the pipe often becomes the true bottleneck. A supplier who publishes flow data with test conditions is easier to defend in bids.
